African Dance
by
Rodney Phifer
Get ready for fun with African folk dancing! For today's adventure, San
Francisco's favorite street musician, Tony Harris, will be joining me
on drums, woodwinds, bells, and shells.
To me, the heart of folk is the daily life of the common people. African
folk dance, like its sister the mythical story, takes from the oral
and dance tradition, and is handed down and reinterpreted from one
generation to the next. Like the smell of fresh bread baking in the
oven, the essence of African folk dance takes you back to your roots.
Waking early, we reach to the warmth of the African sun, and so this
first movement begins the dance which will express the day.
We're looking forward to taking you to Africa, and into the heart
of the African folk dance tradition.
