Matt Lax and the Nearly Beloved
This is fleet-footed country Americana built around
venerable Bay Area tunesmith Matt Lax. I first met Max when he was the
head guitarslinger in the local world beat (remember world beat?) band,
Zulu Spear. Matt and his many talented brothers have kicked around many
classic local bands playing everything from polka to blues to African.
With his latest band, Matt returns to Hank Williams-style roots country
he first cut his teeth on. Lots of Cadillac cowboy twang here, with just
a touch of Zulu guitar style still remaining. They’ve played together
for a looong while and it shows. The playing is drum-tight. The rhythm
bounces along at breakneck speed. And the song are clever and well-crafted.
Take a listen to their you tube vids, and see how good they sound for
yourself.
