Irish Songs and Ballads
Amelia Hogan and Ray Frank
This workshop celebrates Irish history as expressed
through the voices of storytellers in ballads, songs and the Sean Nos
tradition. We will go on a journey of the Irish experience from the old
world to the new. From the wild mountains to the soggy turf, we'll travel
an Irish road. We will begin with some traditional pieces that create
a setting for our storytelling session. Come to listen and share your
musical stories. This is a singing workshop and instruments are welcome
to accompany a song.
Raised in the San Francisco Folk Music Club, with music as a part of
her home life, Amelia Hogan has been singing since before she could walk.
Her early and continuous exposure to a broad array of folk music has
given her a large repertoire of wonderful songs. With her Irish heritage
and gift for singing from the heart, she brings her audience into a very
personal experience of Irish culture and storytelling.
A veteran of the West Coast contra dance circuit with Stump Tail Dog,
Ray Frank started out on the East Coast, with classical guitar training
and studio session work in New York City. He builds and lovingly restores
banjos and is known nationwide as a master of tasteful accompaniment
and tasteless humor.
