Song Gems from California’s History
Karen Arlen & Nancie Kester

California is a treasure trove of authentic songs that tie into its colorful history. Presenters will share some gems from their book They Came Singing: Songs from California’s History. Song materials cover nine historical periods (First People and Early Explorers through the Gold Rush). Make your song repertoire both interesting and relevant as you integrate traditional early songs of California with the history of our state.

Karen Arlen and Nancie Kester, partners in Calicanto Associates, compile and publish books, plays and CDs on California history through song. Their two books, They Came Singing: Songs from California’s History and Days of Gold! Songs of the California Gold Rush, are on the California Dept. of Education state approved list for compliance with Social Studies and Performing Arts standards. Nancie and Karen also present teacher workshops at state and national conferences, historical venues and school in-services.
