Folk-Rock on Film
Richie Unterberger

Richie Unterberger presents a two-hour event featuring rare clips of folk-rock performances from the 1960s. Included will be footage of the Byrds, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Simon & Garfunkel, Love, Fairport Convention, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, the Lovin' Spoonful, Richard & Mimi Farina, Pentangle, Leonard Cohen, Tim Buckley, Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Youngbloods, Judy Collins, and others.

This is a visual complement to his two-part history of 1960s folk-rock, Turn! Turn! Turn!: The Folk-Rock Revolution (Backbeat Books, 2002) and Eight Miles High: Folk-Rock's Flight from Haight-Ashbury to Woodstock (Backbeat, 2003). The films, and books, document a period when folk and rock combined to take popular music to heights that neither style could have reached on its own. This period saw an extraordinary upheaval in music, popular culture, and society, and the presentation will illuminate the seismic changes in which folk-rock played such a large part.

San Francisco resident Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous other rock history books, including Unknown Legends of Rock'n'Roll; The Unreleased Beatles: Music and Film; White Light/White Heat: The Velvet Underground Day-By-Day; and the newly published Won't Get Fooled Again: The Who from Lifehouse to Quadrophenia. He regularly gives presentations featuring rare rock and soul clips throughout the Bay Area and elsewhere.
