Inspired by San Francisco's storied past as a mecca for fortune-seekers, adventurers, and social misfits, The Barbary Ghosts play music of seafaring and long forgotten histories. Armed with a fiddle, guitar, and button accordion, the group has begun to make their mark on folk and Americana scenes opening up for acts such as Todd Snider, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and The Mekons. Recent performances at Strawberry Music Festival and the San Francisco Sea Music Concert Series have established the Ghosts' place at the forefront of the sea music genre.
The band's debut album, The Ghost of the William Grey combines traditional sea chanties, old-time ballads and drinking songs, and well-crafted originals to create a sound that is fresh and distinct but still maintains the integrity of tradition.
