Al 'Azifoon is a chamber group of musicians playing classical and modern Arabic music on traditional and contemporary instruments. We are based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We believe that music transcends all borders and barriers of language -- and can facilitate empathy, respect, and peace. We are dedicated students and performers of Classical Arabic music and enjoy sharing our love of this music with others.

This wonderful music will be performing and accompanying Monica Berini and the Zakiyya Dancers. What an incredible treat we have here!

Monica Berini is a San Francisco based performer and instructor who has been studying Arabic dance and music since her teens, with training in San Francisco, New York and Cairo. Monica has an extensive performance history that includes improvisational solo work and award-winning choreographed troupe experience. Her soulful belly dance style is based on both vintage Arab-American belly dance and Egyptian raqs sharqi and raqs baladi, with a foundation of solid folkloric roots. Monica likes, performs, and teaches Egyptian and Old-School style belly dance. Music, cultural context, ongoing learning and respect for the roots are at the forefront of her artistic pursuits. All of this provides Monica and her students with 'farha'--never ending joy, which is at the heart of the style. Monica teaches weekly classes at the Alonzo King Lines Dance Center in San Francisco as well as workshops around the west coast. Along with dance, Monica maintains an ongoing Arabic language and music practice, and performs with several music ensembles around the Bay Area. You can keep up with current classes, performances, and projects at www.monicaraqs.com.

Nathan and Yosifah Rose Craver have a long history with the Folk Festival. Nathan volunteered and performed at the first Festival (in 1976!) and the pair first decided to make harmony together after a Harmony Workshop at the 1987 Festival. Their folk-rock band Lost Prophets performed at the 1989 Festival and Yosifah Rose served as the Festival Coordinator in 1990. They are happy to be back for 2014 with their first SFFFF performance as Al 'Azifoon!
