Julian & the Upside Sound is a cheery quintet hailing from Ukiah, Ca. Front man Julian McClanahan is still in high school yet boasts 5 CDs under his belt. His songs exude the buoyant optimism and enthusiasm of a youth raised on sunny California beaches and the rolling hills of Ukiah. The band features a violin, cello, and banjo driven pop/Americana sound that occasionally veers south of the border for a tinge of mariachi and salsa.

When I was nine I recorded my first CD, Father and Son, which consisted of six traditional tracks and eight originals. When I was ten we recorded Lighthouse on a Cliff, which consisted of two traditional tracks and twelve originals. When I was eleven my father got a sabbatical to teach in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. We didn't make a CD that year, but I played a lot of music with my father and with Juanit...o Zihua's salsa band and I took virhuela and violin lessons from the members of Mariachi Apatzingan. Going to school, making friends, perfecting my Spanish, listening to a wider variety of music, playing soccer, traveling, surfing, eating tropical fruits, and having more time to write music in Mexico, along with not being around my traditional music friends in California, allowed me to find more of what is my own voice as a musician. Mango! felt like I'd found my own original sound. Two years later my father got a year long Fulbright and we found ourselves living in Sheffield England. Our fourth album Expectations reflected that year. Now that I am a senior in high school, our band has become a quintet and we are in the process of preparing for our fifth album. I hope you like our upbeat all acoustic sound! Thanks. Julian
