Music 1 - Room #102

Yes, you can fiddle and sing at the same time -- just like John Hartford and Bruce Molesky! Learn ways of using drone strings, melody and harmony lines, chording and rhythm on your fiddle to enrich and support your singing. We'll start with simple 2 and 3 chord songs and then explore more complex melodies, working with old-time, blues, cajun and other styles of music. We look at the differences of playing solo and with other musicians. Appropriate for beginning to advanced players.

John Roy Zat has been fiddling and singing in the Bay Area since the 1970s. He has performed with Kate Wolf, Nina Gerber, Queen Ida, and many other fine musicians over the years. Kate Wolf recorded his words to "Midnight on the Water" for her second album, and the song has since been covered by Banish Misfortune, Caroline Herring and others. In 2011, John released two CDs, "Solo" and "Collaborations", both of which get consistent airplay on independent radio. More info about John and his music at
