North Indian Classical Dance
Kathak, classical dance of North India, is characterized by rapid-fire, percussive footwork, swift pirouettes, detailed hand gestures and flowing arms. With one of the world's most complex rhythmic systems, the dancer performs spectacular footwork compositions with quick spins ending in a crisp, stand-still pose. A Kathaka, or Kathak dancer, is also a storyteller. Katha means to tell stories and the Kathaka re-enacts the epics of India and the dancer.s the portrayal of deities is an offering and invocation.
