Music 2 - Room #108
CircleSinging can be described lots of ways: vocal improvisation, vocal "jamming", add-a-part/change-a-part, vocal orchestra, "voicestra", a "drum circle" for singers, or just plain "make it up" singing.
Deborah "DJ" Hamouris will start with simple vocal warm-ups, and then begin creating improvised choral parts for all. Once there's a groove going, singers are invited into the middle of the circle to solo or just experience the sound from the center of the community of voices. Very little spoken instruction happens, but a lot of listening & singing! It is not unusual to find yourself moving to the groove, too.
DJ has been circlesinging for over a decade and has been healed & inspired by this singing form. Recovering from a classical music education, circlesinging led her to jazz performance, composition, and all-round loosening up of the musical reins. Deborah teaches mountain dulcimer, directs Women & Song (women's singing ensemble), and plays as part of The DulciMates, a duo with husband, Buffalo. In her spare time, she knits.www.djhamouris.com.
